Central Heating System Cleaner - Sludge, Flux & Scale Remover

Vitcas Central Heating System Cleaner is a powerful chemical treatment formulated to clean central heating systems by removing commissioning residues, flux deposits, limescale, and accumulated sludge. It is ideal for both new installations and older systems suffering from poor circulation or cold spots in radiators. It is recommended before adding a corrosion inhibitor and is especially important when components are replaced or systems are extended.

The cleaner is compatible with all common system materials, including micro-bore pipework, plastic header tanks, and all metal types used in heating circuits, including aluminium. Suitable for fully indirect systems only.

Key Features

  • Removes sludge, flux, limescale, and installation debris

  • Restores circulation and improves heat transfer efficiency

  • Essential for system commissioning, component replacement, or system extensions

  • Compatible with all metals, including aluminium

  • Safe for plastic tanks and micro-bore pipework

  • For use in fully indirect systems only

Not suitable for PRIMATIC single-feed cylinders

For ongoing protection, flush the system after cleaning and treat with Vitcas Central Heating Inhibitor. If the boiler is noisy (knocking or kettling), apply Vitcas Central Heating Boiler Noise Silencer after cleaning.

Dosage: 1 litre of liquid or 1 cartridge of concentrate treats up to 100 litres of system water (approx. 10 standard radiators).

Application Instructions - Liquid Form

  1. Switch on the boiler and mains water supply and drain down the heating system

  2. Locate the central heating feed and expansion cistern

  3. Shake the bottle thoroughly and pour the full contents into the cistern

  4. Refill the system, restart the boiler and circulation pump

  5. Bleed all radiators to remove trapped air

  6. Allow the system to circulate under normal operation based on the guide below

Recommended Circulation Times

  • Quick Clean (New Components): 2 hours (hot circulation)

  • Fresh Installation (New System): 2 weeks

  • Previously Treated System: 3 weeks

  • Older, Sludged System: 4 weeks

After the cleaning period, flush the system thoroughly until the water runs clear. Then refill and treat with Vitcas Central Heating Inhibitor to protect against future build-up.

As an alternative, the cleaner may be added via a partially drained radiator, but the system must still be flushed and refilled afterwards.

Application Instructions - Concentrated Cartridge

  1. Close both radiator valves and remove the bleed screw using a radiator vent key

  2. Insert the supplied plastic adaptor into the bleed port and turn clockwise to ensure a tight fit. Trim the adaptor if needed

  3. Cut off the domed end of the cartridge and attach it to the adaptor using a standard cartridge gun

  4. Open one radiator valve and inject the entire contents into the radiator

  5. Close the valve, remove the adaptor, and replace the bleed screw

  6. Open both radiator valves and bleed the radiator to remove trapped air

  7. Operate the system under normal conditions based on the recommended circulation schedule

After the treatment period, flush the system until the water runs clear. Then refill and add Vitcas Central Heating Inhibitor to ensure long-term protection against sludge, scale, and corrosion.

Product Q&A

Question
Can this cleaner restore circulation to cold radiators?
Answer
VITCAS Central Heating System Cleaner removes accumulated sludge, limescale, flux and installation debris that can restrict water circulation and contribute to cold spots in radiators. The treatment must circulate for the period appropriate to the system’s condition, after which the system should be flushed thoroughly until the water runs clear.
Question
Can it be used in new central heating systems?
Answer
The cleaner is suitable for removing commissioning residues and flux deposits from newly installed systems. It should also be used when heating components are replaced or an existing system is extended. For a fresh installation, circulate the treatment under normal operating conditions for two weeks before flushing and refilling the system.
Question
Which heating system materials are compatible with this cleaner?
Answer
The treatment is compatible with common central heating metals, including aluminium, and can be used with plastic header tanks and micro-bore pipework. This makes it suitable for many mixed-material installations. It is intended only for fully indirect systems and must not be used with PRIMATIC single-feed cylinders.
Question
How much central heating cleaner does my system need?
Answer
One litre of liquid cleaner or one concentrated cartridge treats up to 100 litres of system water, equivalent to approximately ten standard radiators. Larger systems require additional product. Base the dosage on the total system capacity rather than radiator count alone, particularly where radiators or pipework are unusually large.
Question
How long should the cleaner circulate in the system?
Answer
The required circulation period depends on the installation. Allow two hours of hot circulation when cleaning after fitting new components, two weeks for a fresh installation, three weeks for a previously treated system and four weeks for an older, sludged system. Operate the heating normally throughout the specified treatment period.
Question
How is the liquid cleaner added to central heating?
Answer
Switch on the boiler and mains water supply, then drain down the system. Shake the bottle thoroughly and pour the full contents into the feed and expansion cistern. Refill the system, restart the boiler and circulation pump, and bleed every radiator to remove trapped air before beginning the recommended circulation period.
Question
What should I do after the cleaning treatment?
Answer
After the recommended circulation period, flush the central heating system thoroughly until the discharged water runs clear. Refill the installation and add VITCAS Central Heating System Inhibitor to provide ongoing protection against sludge, scale and corrosion. The cleaner should not be left permanently in the system as a substitute for inhibitor.
