Boilers
Refractory Linings and Insulation for Boilers – Refractory Materials for Domestic, Commercial & Industrial Systems
Boilers are pressurised systems in which heat produced through combustion is transferred to water, generating steam or hot water for heating or power generation. These systems are used in both domestic and industrial settings, and due to the high service temperatures involved-particularly in industrial operations-they require durable, heat-resistant refractory materials for safe and efficient operation.
Domestic boilers
Domestic boilers are primarily used in central heating systems and for supplying hot water in residential settings. Typically, these are combination units designed to perform both functions simultaneously. The average thermal output of a domestic boiler is around 25 kilowatts. While they operate at lower temperatures than industrial systems, proper insulation is still required around flues and internal heat exchangers to maintain energy efficiency and prevent heat loss.
Commercial and industrial boilers
Industrial and commercial boilers operate at significantly higher outputs-ranging from 250 kW to over 1500 kW-and are commonly found in facilities such as factories, universities, warehouses, and power generation plants. These units often use steam for energy conversion or for powering mechanical systems.
Due to the elevated service temperatures and demanding operating conditions, refractory materials are essential for constructing and insulating these boilers. Suitable solutions include mouldable refractories, castable refractory linings, and ceramic fibre insulation. These materials not only enhance thermal efficiency but also protect the steel structure of the boiler from heat damage, corrosion, and chemical attack.
In power generation applications, where efficiency and emission control are critical, the correct selection of refractory products ensures longer service life, reduced downtime, and compliance with environmental standards.
