Fireplace Construction Boards for Built-In Stoves

VITCAS Fireplace Construction Board is a rigid calcium-silicate insulation board designed for constructing fireplace chambers, false chimney breasts and enclosures around compatible inset and cassette appliances.

The board can be cut and shaped to suit the required fireplace geometry and forms part of a construction system that can include board-edge preparation, suitable adhesive or mechanical fixing, surface sealing and a compatible heat-resistant finish.

The board should be treated as part of the fireplace enclosure system rather than as a universal substitute for structural masonry or for the appliance manufacturer's required clearances.

Heat-Resistant Render & Plaster Around Fireplace Inserts

Different finishing materials are used according to the substrate and required surface finish. VITCAS Fireplace Render is a heat-resistant base coat for compatible brick, stone, concrete and masonry surfaces, while VITCAS Heat Resistant Plaster provides a smoother finishing layer for suitable heat-exposed areas around fireplace and stove openings.

Heat Resistant Plaster is rated up to 650°C, while Fireplace Render has a higher published temperature capability of up to 1400°C. These values apply to the individual products and do not define the permissible temperature or clearance of the complete fireplace installation.

Finishing Fireplace Construction Board

Where Fireplace Construction Board is used to create a visible enclosure, surface preparation depends on the chosen finish. VITCAS PVA Adhesive Sealer can prepare compatible porous surfaces before application of specified finishing materials.

The finishing build should be selected as a system. Board, primer or sealer, adhesive, filler, plaster and decorative finish should be compatible with one another and suitable for the surface temperature expected at that position around the appliance.

Tiles Around an Inset or Cassette Stove

Tiled fireplace surrounds can be created using suitable heat-resistant fixing materials where the substrate, tile and installation temperature are compatible. VITCAS Heat Resistant Tile Adhesive and compatible heat-resistant grout are rated for high-temperature tiling around fireplaces and heating appliances.

Adhesive temperature capability alone does not determine the suitability of the complete tiled surface. Consider the tile type, substrate stability, joint design, thermal movement and surface temperature around the particular stove installation.

Stove Glass, Door & Panel Seals

Inset and cassette appliances may use different gasket profiles around glass, doors and removable panels. Stove Glass Ladder Tape provides a thin compressible seal for compatible stove-glass arrangements, while round or braided fire rope is used where the appliance has a corresponding gasket channel.

Replacement seals should match the original profile, dimensions and compression behaviour. Flat tape, ladder tape and round rope perform differently and should not be treated as interchangeable solely because they are all heat-resistant textiles.

Flexible Sealant vs Stove Rope

VITCAS Heat Resistant Silicone remains flexible and is rated up to 315°C. It is suited to compatible joints where a flexible sealant is required and where the service temperature remains within its published limit.

Stove rope performs a different function. It provides a compressible fibrous gasket for compatible door, panel and flue arrangements and is available in different profiles and diameters. Select between silicone, rope and other sealing products according to the joint design and required movement rather than maximum temperature alone.

Heat-Resistant Filler & Surface Repairs

VITCAS Heat Resistant Filler can be used for compatible small joints and localised surface imperfections within suitable high-temperature finishing systems. It is particularly relevant where heat-resistant boards or prepared fireplace surfaces require minor filling before the final finish is applied.

Filler is a finishing and repair product rather than a structural board adhesive, flexible joint sealant or refractory masonry mortar. Match the repair material to the function and depth of the area being treated.

Heat-Resistant Paint & Decorative Finishes

Selected metal components around a built-in stove can be refinished using a suitable high-temperature coating. VITCAS heat-resistant spray paints are available for compatible metal surfaces exposed to elevated temperatures.

For walls and fireplace enclosures, select the decorative finish according to the underlying heat-resistant construction system and expected surface temperature. A high-temperature paint does not replace the board, render, plaster or clearance requirements of the appliance installation.

Installation, Clearances & Appliance Requirements

A built-in stove transfers heat to the surrounding enclosure differently from a freestanding appliance. The construction around the insert therefore needs to account for manufacturer-specified clearances, ventilation openings, enclosure geometry, flue arrangement and temperatures at adjacent surfaces.

What should be checked before finishing the wall around a fireplace insert?

Confirm the appliance position, required clearances, ventilation openings, flue route, board or masonry substrate and expected surface temperature before applying render, plaster, tiles or paint. It is easier to design the finishing system correctly before the final decorative layers are installed.

Can ordinary plaster be used close to an inset or cassette stove?

Ordinary decorative plaster is not designed for the elevated temperatures that can occur around a built-in stove.
