Selecting a Heat-Resistant Tiling System

A durable tiled finish near a heating appliance depends on more than the temperature rating printed on the adhesive or grout. Compatible Tiles and Finishes

Heavy tiles and stone must be physically supported during fixing and curing. Adhesive bond alone should not be expected to prevent downward movement before it has set. Assessing the Substrate

The adhesive is intended for suitable masonry, ceramic and metal substrates and may be used with specified heat-resistant construction and insulation boards. Flexible, vibrating, contaminated or inadequately supported surfaces can cause loss of adhesion or cracking even when the adhesive itself remains within its temperature rating.

Preparing Porous Surfaces

Remove dust, grease, soot, loose coatings and friable material. The surface must be sound, clean and dry. Porous masonry, fresh cement, plaster, fireboards and absorbent tile backs can draw liquid from the adhesive and interfere with the bond. Apply PVA Adhesive Sealer undiluted to the prepared porous surfaces and continue with the adhesive when the sealer is tacky to the touch.

The product guidance specifies sealing both the surface being tiled and the back of porous tiles. Drying varies with temperature, humidity and absorption, so judge the required tack from the treated surface rather than relying on a fixed time. PVA should not be added to the adhesive or grout mix unless expressly required by current technical documentation.

Flatness and Adhesive-Bed Thickness
