Fireplace Construction Board
VITCAS Fireplace Construction Board is a rigid calcium-silicate insulation board designed for constructing compatible fireplace chambers, false chimney breasts, stove recesses and enclosures around inset and cassette appliances.
The board combines thermal insulation with mechanical stability and can be cut and shaped to form purpose-built fireplace structures. This makes it particularly useful where a new enclosure is required without relying entirely on an existing masonry chimney breast.
The board is classified A1 for reaction to fire. This classification relates to the board material itself and should not be interpreted as a fire-resistance period for the completed fireplace wall or as permission to reduce appliance clearances.
Insulation Board vs Heat Accumulation Board
Fireplace Construction Board is primarily an insulating construction material. Its purpose is different from a dense heat accumulation board, which is deliberately selected to absorb and store thermal energy.
The two material types may be used within related fireplace projects but solve different thermal requirements. Use insulating construction board where heat transfer through the enclosure should be reduced, and heat accumulation materials where the system is intentionally designed to store and progressively release heat.
Preparing Cut Board Edges
Cut edges of Fireplace Construction Board should be prepared with VITCAS Board Primer where specified. The primer hardens and strengthens the edge before Heat Resistant Board Adhesive is applied.
Board Primer and PVA Adhesive Sealer perform different preparation functions. Board Primer is associated with strengthening suitable cut edges before jointing, while PVA is used to prepare compatible porous surfaces for subsequent bonding or finishing stages.
Joining Fireplace Construction Boards
VITCAS Heat Resistant Board Adhesive is formulated for jointing compatible construction and insulation boards and for fixing suitable boards to sufficiently flat brickwork or blockwork.
For masonry fixing, the substrate should provide a close-fitting background. Where the installation requires greater gap filling, thicker bonding or additional positioning time, HB60 Hydraulic Bonded Adhesive may be the more appropriate construction adhesive.
Board Adhesive vs HB60
Board Adhesive and HB60 are both used in high-temperature construction but have different working characteristics. Board Adhesive is a ready-mixed product suited to compatible close-fitting board joints and suitable flat backgrounds, while HB60 is a hydraulically bonded powder adhesive that provides approximately 60 minutes of working time and can accommodate thicker compatible applications.
Select between them according to the substrates being joined, required application thickness, surface condition and installation sequence rather than maximum temperature capability alone.
Preparing the Board Surface for Finishing
Before applying a compatible finishing system, porous board surfaces may require preparation with VITCAS PVA Adhesive Sealer. This helps control surface absorption and prepares the board for specified subsequent materials.
The exact preparation sequence depends on whether the finished surface will be plastered, tiled or treated in another approved way. Follow the preparation requirements for the selected board and finishing products rather than assuming that one primer sequence applies to every finish.
Reinforcing Board Joints & Internal Corners
Board joints and internal corners can concentrate stress as the construction dries and experiences thermal cycling. High-Temperature Fibreglass Mesh Scrim Tape is used with compatible finishing materials to reinforce these areas before the final surface is completed.
Reinforcement helps distribute stress within the finishing layer but does not replace correct board alignment, fixing, joint preparation or movement detailing.
Heat-Resistant Filler for Small Joints & Surface Imperfections
VITCAS Heat Resistant Filler is suitable for compatible small joints, cracks and local surface imperfections in high-temperature board and finishing systems.
Filler is intended for local finishing work rather than structural assembly. Board Adhesive or another specified construction adhesive should be used where boards or major components need to be joined.
Heat Resistant Plaster for the Final Surface
VITCAS Heat Resistant Plaster provides a smooth finish for compatible prepared fireplace and stove surrounds and is rated up to 650°C.
It can be applied as part of a compatible board-based finishing system around fireplace inserts, inset and cassette appliances and other heating installations. The plaster's own 650°C service limit remains relevant even where the board or adhesive beneath it has a higher temperature capability.
Fireplace Construction Boards for Inserts & Cassette Stoves
Rigid insulation construction boards are particularly useful for building purpose-designed enclosures around fireplace inserts, inset stoves and cassette stoves. They can form the chamber, recess or false chimney breast while providing thermal insulation between the appliance area and the outer construction.
The board system does not determine the appliance clearances. Maintain the manufacturer's specified distances, ventilation openings, flue arrangement and enclosure requirements for the installed stove or fireplace insert.
Freestanding Stove Surrounds
Construction boards can also form compatible wall features and surrounds near freestanding wood-burning or multi-fuel stoves. The appropriate design depends on the stove position, required clearances and temperatures expected at the board surface.
A heat-resistant or non-combustible board should not be used as a reason to reduce the clearances specified for the appliance unless the installation design explicitly permits that arrangement.
Tiled Fireplace & Stove Surrounds
