The range comprises 400ml silicone-resin aerosols in black, silver, white and cream/beige rated to 800°C, plus red rated to 300°C. Select by measured surface temperature as well as colour: the red coating must not be treated as an 800°C product. Choosing Heat-Resistant Spray Paint

High-temperature paint must be selected for the actual substrate and the highest surface temperature expected in service. Colour alone is not a sufficient selection criterion because the red product has a substantially lower rating than the other colours in this category. Preparation and curing are equally important: even a correctly rated coating can peel, blister or discolour if it is applied over grease, corrosion, enamel or an incompatible existing finish.

The published coverage for each 400ml aerosol is approximately 1.5m². Actual coverage depends on surface profile, colour contrast, overspray, number of coats and application technique. The advertised temperature is the maximum listed coating rating, not a recommended operating temperature or proof that every painted component can tolerate the same heat.

Measure the Surface Temperature

Surface temperature can vary considerably across a stove, boiler, flue, barbecue or vehicle component. Measure or obtain reliable design data for the hottest part to be painted under the most demanding normal operating condition. Select a coating whose rating is not exceeded and confirm that thermal cycling, outdoor exposure and the substrate are within the product instructions.

The black, silver, white and cream/beige products are listed to 800°C. Red is limited to 300°C, so it may be unsuitable for a surface that can accept one of the 800°C colours. If the temperature is uncertain or can approach the stated maximum, obtain technical confirmation before painting rather than relying on visual similarity to another component.

Suitable Surfaces

The principal substrate is clean, correctly prepared bare metal. Confirmed examples vary by colour and include carbon-steel casings, stainless steel and aluminium. Black and white product information also identifies certain vermiculite, fireplace-construction or high-temperature insulation boards. Board compatibility must be checked against the exact colour and current product instructions; it should not be assumed for the entire range.

Do not apply the spray generally to render, ordinary plaster, cement, limestone, marble, ceramic, glass, enamel or another decorative coating unless the selected product expressly lists that surface. Smooth, plated or previously coated components may require a different preparation or coating system. A high temperature rating cannot compensate for poor adhesion to an incompatible substrate.

Spray Application

  2. Work in a well-ventilated area away from ignition sources and do not spray a hot surface.

Excessive film thickness can run, trap solvent, cure unevenly or reduce adhesion. Spray distance and movement should produce a continuous coating without local heavy build-up. Protect surrounding property and control overspray, particularly outdoors.

Drying and Heat Curing

The product pages generally state that the coating becomes tack-free or touch-dry in approximately 15 minutes. Touch-dry does not mean fully cured. The declared full-cure schedule is one hour at a surface temperature of 160°C, and some smoke may be released during that first heat cycle.

Some product answers also state that the coating may be left to dry naturally at room temperature or used on surfaces that do not reach 160°C. This should not be confused with the specified heat-cured state. Where the component cannot safely be heated to 160°C, check the current aerosol instructions or obtain confirmation of the properties achieved by air drying alone.

During permitted heat curing, raise the equipment temperature in accordance with its operating instructions and provide the ventilation required by the paint label. Keep people and animals away from fumes. Stop heating and investigate if the coating blisters, lifts, produces abnormal persistent fumes or affects appliance operation.

Indoor and Outdoor Use

Several colour pages describe the sprays as suitable for both indoor and outdoor applications. Exterior durability still depends on surface preparation, coating continuity, exposure, drainage and maintenance. A single aerosol coating should not be represented as a complete heavy-duty corrosion system without supporting test data.

Inspect exterior metal periodically for chips, corrosion and loss of adhesion. Barbecue and fire-pit surfaces may also be exposed to rain, ash, abrasion and cooking residues. Use the coating only on suitable non-food-contact surfaces and within its temperature rating.

Barbecues, Ovens and Food Contact

These products are decorative high-temperature coatings. They do not insulate a surface, reduce the clearance required from combustible materials or provide a tested fire-resistance period. They are not intumescent paints and must not be specified as passive fire protection for structural steel, walls, ceilings or service penetrations.

The painted appliance, enclosure and flue must continue to comply with the manufacturer's installation requirements and applicable building provisions. Painting does not repair cracked metal, defective fireproofing, inadequate insulation or a damaged flue.

Storage, Handling and Disposal

  • Store aerosol cans in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight and temperatures above 50°C.
  • Keep away from children, heat, sparks, flames and other ignition sources.

Inspect the finish after curing and periodically during service. Look for blistering, peeling, corrosion, colour change and damage caused by cleaning or abrasion. Before recoating, establish why the previous finish failed and remove unsound material. Do not repeatedly spray over a deteriorating coating, because additional layers can conceal corrosion and worsen adhesion.
