Heat-resistant plaster and fireplace render form a layered finishing system for masonry or board-built surrounds around inset, cassette and freestanding stoves. On suitable brick, stone or blockwork, FR Fireplace Render provides a heat-resistant base coat rated to 1400°C, normally applied at a minimum of 12mm or at 25mm around an open fire. After the render has dried fully, been commissioned as instructed and received an undiluted PVA coat, HRP Heat Resistant Plaster is applied at 3–6mm to create a smooth finish rated to 650°C. For compatible board construction, install HT High Temperature Fireboard with its rough face ready to receive plaster, reinforce the joints, apply PVA and finish with HRP. Understanding the Heat-Resistant Plaster and Render System
A durable fireplace or stove surround depends on compatible layers, correct thicknesses and controlled drying. The products in this category do not all perform the same function and their individual temperature ratings cannot be applied to the complete construction. FR Fireplace Render forms the refractory base on stable masonry. HRP Heat Resistant Plaster provides the final smooth finish over dry FR render or a compatible high-temperature construction board. PVA controls suction and promotes adhesion, while fibreglass scrim reinforces board joints beneath the plaster.
The appropriate construction depends on the appliance, substrate, distance from the heat source and highest surface temperature in normal and abnormal operating conditions. Always follow the appliance manufacturer's clearance and ventilation requirements. The products described here are intended for suitable surrounds and adjacent heat-exposed surfaces; they must not be assumed suitable inside a firebox, in direct flame contact or in place of a tested hearth, chimney or passive-fire-protection system.

Temperature Ratings and System Limits
FR Fireplace Render has a maximum listed temperature of 1400°C, whereas HRP and HT High Temperature Fireboard are listed to 650°C. These values describe individual products under their stated conditions; they are not a single rating for every assembly made from them. Where HRP forms the exposed finish, selection must respect its 650°C limit as well as the limits of the substrate, board, fixings, joint treatment and any decoration.
A maximum material rating is not a target operating temperature. It does not establish the required distance between an appliance and a combustible wall, prove fire resistance for a stated period or certify a complete wall or ceiling assembly. Obtain the actual surface-temperature and clearance requirements from the appliance manufacturer. Where compliance, insurance or life safety depends on a tested construction, use the exact documented system rather than combining components solely because their individual ratings appear adequate.
Assessing and Preparing Masonry
The background must be stable, clean and capable of carrying the new render. Remove wallpaper, paint, soot, dust, grease, loose plaster, friable mortar and other materials that could impair adhesion. Existing joints should be raked out to approximately 12mm where required by the render instructions. Smooth brick or stone may also need mechanical roughening to provide a suitable key.
Slightly dampen dry, absorbent masonry before rendering, but do not saturate it or apply the material over standing water. Investigate persistent damp, salt contamination, movement or cracking before covering the surface. Heat-resistant render will not stabilise defective masonry, correct a leaking chimney or accommodate uncontrolled structural movement.
Applying FR Fireplace Render
Mix the dry powder with clean cold tap water at approximately 200ml per kilogram, adding only enough water to obtain a stiff trowelling consistency. Mix manageable quantities because site temperature, absorbency and working method affect usable time. Do not add ordinary cement, gypsum plaster, pigments or unapproved admixtures.

Build thicker areas in the layers directed by the latest product instructions rather than applying an uncontrolled heavy coat. Compact the render against the prepared background and avoid hollow areas. If HRP will be applied later, leave the surface keyed rather than polishing it smooth. The published coverage of a 20kg bag is approximately 0.4m² at 25mm; actual consumption increases on uneven substrates and where joints or hollows require filling.
Drying and Initial Heating of Fireplace Render
Protect fresh render from rapid moisture loss, frost and premature heating. Current product information refers to overnight protection and a natural drying period, while the finishing-plaster instructions require the FR base to have dried for at least three days above 20°C and longer if moisture remains. A conservative specification is therefore to allow at least 72 hours in warm, ventilated conditions and to extend this period for thick coats, low temperature, high humidity or damp masonry.
FR Fireplace Render also requires controlled initial heating before it is covered with the finishing system. Begin only after natural drying and use the current commissioning directions applicable to that installation. Heating damp refractory material too quickly can generate steam, cracking or local loss of adhesion. Do not proceed with PVA and HRP until the render is dry, stable and has completed the specified commissioning stage.
Using HT High Temperature Fireboard as the Plaster Base
HT High Temperature Fireboard measures 1200 × 800 × 12mm and covers 0.96m² before cutting and waste. It is a rigid, non-gypsum board and is not intended to form bends. For an HRP or tiled finish, install it with the rough reverse face outward; the smooth face is used when the board itself will be painted. Fixings, support centres and edge distances must comply with the board instructions and the substrate must remain stable under thermal cycling.
Before plastering, fill the board joints with the specified heat-resistant filler and centre the 50mm fibreglass scrim tape over joints and internal corners. Allow the joint treatment to dry, coat the surface with undiluted PVA and apply HRP while the primer remains tacky. The self-adhesive tape holds itself in position, but it must be fully embedded beneath the finishing plaster.
The board's A1 classification describes reaction to fire under the cited test standard. It does not assign a period of fire resistance to a wall assembled from the board. The product guidance also advises against using this particular board directly behind a wood-burning stove. For that location, use the construction board, insulation board or rendered masonry system specifically approved for the appliance and installation conditions.
Priming with PVA Adhesive Sealer
Coat the clean, dry FR render or correctly prepared board with undiluted PVA Adhesive Sealer. The primer reduces uneven suction and improves the bond of the finishing plaster. Apply HRP while the PVA is tacky rather than allowing a glossy, fully dried film to remain between the layers, unless current project-specific instructions state otherwise.
The approximate published coverage is 3m² per litre, but porous or uneven surfaces can require more material. PVA is not the visible high-temperature finish and should not be used to claim waterproofing, fire resistance or a higher temperature capability for the system.
Mixing and Applying HRP Heat Resistant Plaster
Use clean cold tap water at approximately 200ml per kilogram of dry plaster. The mixing vessel, paddle and hand tools must be clean and free from gypsum plaster, Portland cement and previously hardened material. Mix only enough for approximately 20 minutes of application time and do not attempt to restore stiffening plaster by adding more water.
- Confirm that the FR render has dried and completed its specified initial heating, or that the compatible board and joints are ready to receive the finish.
- Apply undiluted PVA and begin plastering while it is tacky.
- Spread HRP evenly at 3–6mm. Do not feather the edge to zero thickness.
- After approximately 15–20 minutes, trowel the surface to the required smooth finish while the plaster remains workable.
- Allow the completed finish to dry naturally for at least 72 hours at approximately 20°C, extending the time where conditions are cooler, more humid or poorly ventilated.
HRP cannot be dry-sanded to correct a rough surface, so achieve the final texture during trowelling. If another skim is necessary, allow the first coat to dry, apply PVA and add the subsequent coat within the stated total thickness and system guidance. Published coverage is approximately 2m² per 20kg at 6mm, or 1m² per 10kg at 6mm. Surface condition, waste and local levelling affect practical yield.
Drying, Decoration and Returning the Appliance to Service
Do not paint or heat wet plaster. After HRP has dried completely, it may be decorated with a suitable water-based emulsion as directed by the latest instructions; a mist coat is not normally required. Paint is decorative and does not increase the 650°C temperature rating or provide additional fire protection. Confirm the paint manufacturer's temperature limit and avoid vinyl-rich, oil-based or impermeable coatings unless compatibility has been established.
Commission the completed surround gradually and follow the appliance instructions. Residual moisture can remain in thick masonry even when the surface appears dry. Rapid exposure to full heat can cause shrinkage cracks, steam pressure, staining or loss of adhesion. Maintain ventilation during first use and stop if the finish develops significant cracking, hollow areas or detachment.
Preventing and Repairing Cracks
Fine cracking may result from excessive thickness, rapid drying, insufficient key, substrate movement, poorly supported board joints or early high-temperature operation. Scrim tape reduces stress concentration at board joints but cannot compensate for loose boards, inadequate fixings or structural movement. Never bridge an active expansion or movement joint with rigid plaster unless the system designer has provided an approved detail.
Small stable defects in HRP may be repaired with HRF Heat Resistant Filler as specified by the product guidance. Wider, recurring or hollow-sounding cracks require investigation before cosmetic repair. Remove unsound material and correct the underlying cause; repeatedly filling a moving joint will not produce a durable result.
Safety and Specification Checks
- Read the current product data sheet, safety data sheet and appliance instructions before work begins.
- Confirm the substrate, layer sequence, finished thickness and maximum service temperature for the exact installation.
- Keep required appliance and flue clearances from combustible materials; plaster and render do not authorise a reduction.
- Do not use the products in direct flame contact, inside a firebox or as a hearth material unless the exact product documentation expressly permits that application.
- Wear the respiratory, eye, skin and hand protection stated in the safety data sheets when handling powders, cutting boards and mixing materials.
- Provide suitable extraction when cutting board and avoid generating unnecessary airborne dust.
- Confirm external or persistently damp applications separately. An individual component listed for outdoor use does not make the complete decorated system weatherproof.
