Victorian Cast Iron Fireplaces
Victorian Cast Iron Fireplaces are a traditional style of fireplace. They require a fireback in order to prevent damage from the fire to the brickwork structure of the chimney. A fireback can be very decorative like the Georgian or Victorian models or it can be simply functional and made from plain fire clay. Victorian Cast Iron Firebacks tend to be on the decorative side of the spectrum while also being functional. The designs of the inserts usually carry onto the fire back. A cast iron fireback is usually used in an open fireplace.
History
During the early stages of Queen Victoria's accession to the throne, fireplaces were very decorative with floral designs and ornate detailing. During the latter period of Queen Victoria's reign, they took on a simpler and more geometrical look to them. Functionality was prioritised, which is why cast iron was used in the fireback increasing the fireplace's longevity.
