Vitcas® Heatproof Screed is a specialised cementitious material formulated to protect surfaces exposed to extreme heat, capable of withstanding temperatures up to 1400°C / 2550°F. Ideal for fireplaces, stoves, outdoor pizza ovens and industrial furnaces, it serves as a durable thermal barrier that prevents heat damage to underlying materials. This product is pre-blended with a maximum grain size of 5mm, requiring only the addition of water to achieve a trowelling consistency. Its versatility makes it suitable for a range of high-temperature applications, including casting replacement fire bricks.
Key Features
Temperature Resistance: Operates up to 1400°C / 2550°F.
Pre-Mixed Composition: Requires only water for preparation.
Application Versatility: Suitable for both new and old masonry surfaces.
Unlimited Thickness: Can be applied in any thickness in one layer.
Aggregate Size: Maximum particle size of 5mm for smooth application.
Instructions
New Brickwork: Allow the substrate to fully cure before application.
Existing Surfaces: Rake out mortar joints to a depth of 12.5mm (½ inch), roughen the surface with a sharp tool, and clean off debris.
Mixing: Combine the screed with cold tap water to a stiff, trowellable consistency. Avoid adding any pigments. Dampen the surface slightly before applying.
Casting Replacement Fire Brick: Coat the mould (typically wooden) with vegetable oil before trowelling the screed into the mould. Compact the material, ideally using vibration.
Curing: Let the screed cure for 24 hours, keeping it cool and damp (cover with polythene or wet cloths). After curing, allow an additional 48 hours of natural drying before applying heat.
Drying and Pre-Heating Process
To prevent cracking or spalling due to moisture retention, pre-heat the screed before exposing it to high temperatures:
Use an electric fire or a small paper and cardboard fire to gently heat the surface, avoiding direct flame contact.
Maintain this pre-heat for several hours using a fire guard.
After pre-heating, a conventional fire can be lit, but keep the fire guard in place for the first 2 hours.
Storage: Store any unused Vitcas® Heatproof Screed in a cool, dry place, away from moisture, children, and pets. Reseal any leftover product to preserve its quality.
For assistance in calculating the required quantity, use the Vitcas Quantity Calculator available on our website.
Can the heat proof screed be used to make brick fire pit as an alternative to normal cement?
The heat resistant screed can be used in conjunction with refractory fire bricks as long as the joint thickness is 10mm or above. The heat proof screed can also be used instead of fire bricks with a minimum thickness of 25mm where the screed is in contact...
