Sauna Stoves
Heat-Resistant Materials for Sauna Stoves & Heater Surrounds
VITCAS refractory and heat-resistant materials for sauna stoves, heater surrounds, protective walls, hearths and compatible flue installations. The range includes dense fire bricks, high-temperature fireboard, heat-resistant adhesive, flue insulation, heatproof screed, flexible silicone and high-temperature coatings for suitable wood-burning and sauna-heater installations.
Sauna rooms combine elevated temperatures with repeated changes in humidity, while the areas closest to the heater can experience intense radiant and convected heat. The stove or refractory section, protective wall, flue, flexible joints and external metal surfaces therefore require materials selected for their specific thermal and mechanical function.
In timber-lined sauna rooms, the heater layout should be established before the protective construction is built: appliance clearances, air gaps, ventilation and flue routing determine where refractory or insulating materials belong and how the surrounding wood structure is protected.

Materials for Sauna Stoves, Heat Shields & Flue Installations
A sauna heater installation contains several thermal zones that operate under very different conditions. Dense refractory materials may be suitable around heat-exposed stove or hearth sections, while protective wall constructions require non-combustible boards, compatible fixings and correctly designed air gaps. Flue insulation, flexible seals and external coatings perform separate functions again.
This distinction is particularly important in timber-lined sauna rooms. A material with a high temperature rating does not by itself establish a safe clearance from wood or other combustible surfaces. The sauna stove, heater and chimney-system instructions should define the required installation geometry.

Wood-Burning Sauna Stoves
A wood-burning sauna stove requires more than heat-resistant materials around the appliance. The complete installation includes the stove, hearth, combustion-air supply, connecting flue, chimney and surrounding protective construction.
Clearances from timber walls and other combustible surfaces should follow the stove and chimney-system requirements. Fireboard, brick or another heat-resistant material should be incorporated only as part of a suitable protective arrangement rather than added independently to justify a smaller appliance clearance.
Electric Sauna Heaters
Electric sauna heaters operate without a combustion flue and therefore require a different installation approach from wood-burning stoves. Surrounding heat-resistant boards or finishes may be suitable where permitted by the heater manufacturer, but they should not obstruct designed airflow, ventilation openings or access to the heater.
Electrical connections, cables, controls and protective devices should follow the electrical and appliance requirements applicable to the installation.
Fire Bricks for Sauna Stove Construction
VITCAS dense fireclay bricks measure approximately 230 × 114 × 64mm and are rated for continuous service up to 1300°C. Their dense refractory construction provides heat resistance and thermal mass for compatible masonry and stove applications.
Fire bricks should be used where the sauna stove or surrounding construction is designed for refractory masonry. They perform a different function from proprietary sauna stones, which form part of the heater itself and should be selected according to the appliance manufacturer's specification.
Fire Bricks vs Sauna Stones
Sauna stones are designed to operate as part of the heater, storing heat and interacting with water applied during sauna use. Dense fire bricks are construction materials used for suitable refractory masonry and heat-exposed sections.
The two materials are therefore not interchangeable. Use the stone type, quantity and arrangement specified for the sauna heater, while refractory bricks should remain within construction applications for which they are suitable.
Heatproof Screed for High-Temperature Masonry
VITCAS Heatproof Screed is a cementitious refractory material rated up to 1400°C. It can be used for compatible heat-exposed screeding, refractory repair and shaped masonry applications where its properties suit the sauna stove construction.
Where Heatproof Screed is incorporated into a heater or hearth detail, allow the completed refractory layer to cure and dry according to the product instructions before normal heating. Controlled initial heating allows retained moisture to leave the refractory material progressively.
High Temperature Fireboard for Protective Walls
VITCAS HT High Temperature Fireboard is a non-gypsum board classified A1 for reaction to fire under EN 13501-1. It can form part of a suitable protective wall or heater-surround construction where a non-combustible board surface is required.
The board requires an appropriate supporting structure, joints and fixing arrangement. Where the protective design includes an air gap behind the board, that space forms part of the thermal construction and should be maintained according to the stove or heater installation requirements.
An A1 reaction-to-fire classification describes the board material itself and does not establish a fire-resistance period for the complete wall or determine heater-to-timber clearances.
HB60 Adhesive for Boards & Refractory Components
VITCAS HB60 Hydraulic Bonded Adhesive is suitable for compatible high-temperature boards, refractory units and tiles and is rated up to 750°C.
Its approximately 60-minute working time allows components to be positioned during construction. Select the adhesive according to the board or refractory material, substrate and required application thickness as well as the service temperature.
Flue Insulation for Wood-Burning Sauna Stoves
Compatible flue insulation can reduce heat loss from suitable chimney liners and help maintain flue-gas temperature. VITCAS supplies glass-fibre insulation formats for selected flue and chimney applications.
The E-glass Flue Insulation Wrap is rated up to 550°C and is available for compatible 125mm and 200mm flexible liners. Where aluminium-coated wrap is used, the glass-fibre layer and aluminium facing have separate temperature limits, so each part of the product should remain within its specified thermal capability.
Accessory insulation should complement the specified chimney system and should not be used independently to alter the clearances required where a flue passes near timber or other combustible materials.
Heat Resistant Silicone for Flexible Joints
VITCAS Heat Resistant Silicone remains flexible and is rated up to 315°C. It is suitable for selected peripheral joints around compatible stoves, flues and heat-exposed construction where movement needs to be accommodated.
It is a flexible sealant rather than a refractory mortar and should be used where both the joint design and local service temperature are compatible with the product specification.
Heat-Resistant Paint for Sauna Stove & Flue Surfaces
VITCAS heat-resistant spray paints provide a high-temperature finish for compatible prepared metal stove, heater and flue surfaces. Black, white, silver and cream/beige variants are rated up to 800°C, while the red version has a lower maximum rating of 300°C.
Select the coating according to the actual metal-surface temperature as well as colour. Heat-resistant paint is a finishing product rather than thermal insulation and should be applied only to compatible surfaces specified for coating.
Humidity, Condensation & Sauna Construction
Sauna rooms differ from ordinary stove installations because the surrounding environment experiences repeated changes in temperature and humidity. High-temperature resistance does not automatically mean that a refractory board, adhesive or screed is waterproof or intended for continuous wetting.
The sauna's moisture-management strategy should therefore be considered separately from the heat-protection system. Important factors include condensation on cooler surfaces, moisture behind protective boards, metal-fixing corrosion and movement between timber, steel, masonry and rigid refractory materials.
Heat Protection Around Timber-Lined Sauna Walls
Timber-lined sauna rooms require careful control of the distance between the heater and combustible surfaces. Protective boards and masonry may form part of the specified installation, but their performance depends on the complete build-up, air gap, support system, ventilation and heater geometry.
Heat protection should therefore be designed as a complete construction rather than relying on the temperature capability of a single board or refractory layer.
Selecting Materials for a Sauna Stove Installation
- Refractory construction: use fire bricks or Heatproof Screed where dense high-temperature masonry is part of the designed installation.
- Protective wall: select non-combustible board according to the required wall build-up, support and air gap.
- Board bonding: use HB60 where it is compatible with the selected board, refractory component and substrate.
- Flue insulation: match the insulation format to the liner type, diameter and actual service temperature.
- Flexible sealing: use Heat Resistant Silicone where movement is required and the joint remains within its published temperature range.
- Metal refinishing: choose heat-resistant paint according to the maximum surface temperature of the individual component.
- Humidity: consider vapour control, condensation and moisture exposure separately from refractory temperature resistance.
A well-designed sauna stove installation treats the heater, protective construction, timber room and chimney as one thermal environment, with each material positioned according to the heat, movement and moisture conditions it will experience in service.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which materials can be used around a wood-burning sauna stove?
Depending on the stove design, VITCAS recommends suitable combinations of fire bricks, Heatproof Screed, non-combustible fireboard, heat-resistant adhesive, flue insulation, flexible high-temperature silicone and heat-resistant paint. The required arrangement depends on the heater, wall construction and chimney system.
Can fire bricks be used instead of sauna stones?
No. Fire bricks are refractory construction materials, while sauna stones are designed specifically for use within the heater. Use the type, quantity and arrangement of sauna stones specified by the appliance manufacturer.
Can fire bricks be added inside a manufactured sauna stove?
Only where the stove manufacturer specifies or permits refractory components in that position. Adding thermal mass inside a manufactured heater can alter airflow, combustion and heat transfer, so refractory bricks should not be added simply because they tolerate high temperatures.
Can High Temperature Fireboard reduce the clearance between a sauna stove and a timber wall?
The board can form part of a suitable protective wall system, but its A1 classification or temperature capability does not independently determine the permitted stove clearance. Use the wall arrangement and distances specified by the stove manufacturer or applicable installation design.
Can the same VITCAS materials be used around an electric sauna heater?
Selected boards, finishes or seals may be suitable around an electric heater where the manufacturer permits them. They should not be used to modify the heater, cover ventilation openings or change the appliance's specified clearances and airflow.
Are heat-resistant boards and refractory materials waterproof?
Not necessarily. Temperature resistance and moisture resistance are different properties. Sauna construction should separately address humidity, condensation, vapour control and any areas exposed to direct or repeated water contact.
Which VITCAS spray paint colours are suitable for the highest surface temperatures?
Black, white, silver and cream/beige VITCAS Heat Resistant Spray Paints are rated up to 800°C. The red version is rated to 300°C, so colour should be chosen only after checking the expected temperature of the metal surface.
Can Heat Resistant Silicone be used inside a sauna stove firebox?
No. VITCAS Heat Resistant Silicone is a flexible sealant rated up to 315°C for compatible peripheral joints. It is not a refractory firebox material and should not be exposed to direct flame or temperatures beyond its specified limit.
Why must Heatproof Screed be dried before the sauna stove is fully heated?
Heatproof Screed is mixed with water and retains moisture while curing and drying. Progressive drying and controlled initial heating allow this moisture to leave the refractory material more gradually, reducing the risk of cracking or spalling caused by rapid heating.
What should be checked before a sauna stove is first used?
Confirm the heater position, clearances, protective wall or hearth construction, chimney route, combustion-air supply, ventilation, cured refractory materials and access for inspection and cleaning. For electric heaters, also confirm that the electrical installation and controls comply with the appliance requirements.
